Where to Find Prescription Glasses in Munich.

If you belong to the category of people who did not just pick up their glasses to read this body of small text located underneath the lovely, big heading, then you may skip this one. I love it when people say "Oh what beautiful eyes you have!" to which my reply is "Thank you, they don't work." So, if like me you need to know where to find prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contacts (in Munich) then keep reading.

The company I recommend for all your vision needs is Fielmanns. Here's why I love them:

  • They have branches everywhere, in and around Munich, even in the tiny town that was next to the tiny town that we used to live in.

  • Once you have a lens prescription with them, they can pull it up digitally at any branch to get you a quick replacement. This is also very helpful if you leave Munich, you can get a printed copy of your lens prescription history, making the change to a new optometrist that much easier. Amen! Every branch should be able to access your full history.

  • Almost every person I have ever had an eye test with speaks enough English for me not to have to speak German. Also, it's not like the questions are hard for eye tests, it's either "better" or "worse".

  • The eye test is free!

  • They offer a "zero-tariff" range of frames, which means you can get a pair of glasses frames FREE (sunglass frames also) with every pair of standard lenses you buy. As of March 2024, the price for a pair of glasses with standard lenses starts at 19 euros.

  • You can book, change, and cancel all your appointments online, no need for awkward calls while you are learning German.

  • If at any point after you have purchased your glasses you need them to be adjusted or serviced, you just walk into your nearest store and they will help you, free of charge. You can book a "service" online too.

  • They offer free children's eye tests and have a range of frames for children.

Here's how to get started:

  1. Go have a look at their website here, works well with Google Translate.

  2. Create your account here.

  3. Find your nearest branch using the search tool offered when you click the "Book Appointment" button.

  4. Book your appointment online.

  5. The same process is used for the collection of your frames, you just select "Collection of Frames" once you receive the email that they are ready.

In summary, if you need prescription lenses in Munich, Fielmanns offers everything. Free comprehensive eye tests, a "zero-tariff" range of frames, (offered in conjunction with a new lens purchase), branded frames, contact lenses, branches Munich-wide, and easy online scheduling for all appointments.
